Hillary Clinton says Barbie's Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie are 'more than Kenough' after Oscar snubs

"While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you," the politician wrote.

Hillary Clinton is giving Barbie director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie their flowers after the pair were notably snubbed in their respective categories during the 2024 Oscar nominations yesterday.

“Greta & Margot, While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “You’re both so much more than Kenough. #HillaryBarbie.”

The former Secretary of State isn’t the only one who reacted to the news that Gerwig and Robbie would not be amongst this year’s Academy Awards contenders. America Ferrera, who received her first-ever nomination for her role as Gloria in the film, told EW that she was “sad and disappointed" to see them not included.

"Their work in both of those categories was phenomenal and in my book [they] deserve to be acknowledged for the history they made, for the ground they broke, for the beautiful artistry," Ferrera said. "They're my girls, and I want to see them celebrated for their amazingness, so that part of it is definitely bittersweet."

Ryan Gosling, who was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken, revealed that he was similarly “disappointed” with the pair not being recognized for their work in his own statement.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,” he said. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

Gosling continued, “Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees."

In addition to Ferrera and Gosling's nods, Barbie is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.

The 96th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, March 10, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ABC. See the full list of 2024 Oscar nominations.
