Legendary singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman joined country musician Luke Combs for a moving performance of her 1988 song “Fast Car,” which topped the country charts last year with his cover, at the 2024 Grammys on Sunday. Chapman and Combs could be seen exchanging smiles with one another as they performed. A true fan, Combs could also be spotted watching Chapman strum her acoustic guitar in awe and happily mouthing along to the lyrics whenever she was singing. Kevin Winter/Getty At the end of their performance, Combs bowed down to Chapman as the crowd stood up and gave the singer, who hasn't performed live in years, a standing ovation. John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Oprah Winfrey were all shown on camera cheering. Chapman previously won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance for "Fast Car" in 1989. She went on that night to win the award for Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Folk Recording for her 1988 self-titled album. Eight years later, she earned her fourth Grammy for Best Rock Song for her hit, "Give Me One Reason." In an introductory clip, Combs explained that he grew up listening to Chapman’s self-titled album in his dad’s truck. He added, “That song, ‘Fast Car,’ was my favorite song before I even knew what a favorite song was." “Tracy’s obviously written one of the best songs for a few generations,” he explained, noting that its opening guitar riff is “already iconic even before you’ve heard the words.” Combs, who is nominated for Best Country Performance for his take on the song, noted that it has a universal quality that “can be felt and related to by all kinds of people around the world."
