Gordon Ramsay reveals he was in a 'very bad' bicycling accident: 'Honestly, I'm lucky to be here'

The mishap left the "MasterChef" star with a huge bruise on his ribs, but he says his helmet saved his life.

Gordon Ramsay is speaking out about the importance of wearing a helmet after surviving a serious bicycling accident in Connecticut earlier this week.

The 57-year-old celebrity chef shared the news in an Instagram video on Saturday that featured him lifting up his shirt to reveal a dark purple bruise streaked across a large portion of his left side and ribs.

"This week, unfortunately, I had a really bad accident and it really shook me and, honestly, I'm lucky to be here," Ramsay said in the clip. "From those incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses at the hospital that looked after me this week, they were amazing, but honestly, you've got to wear a helmet. I don't care how short the journey is… they're crucial."

The MasterChef star , who is an avid cyclist, said he is still "in pain" after the mishap. "It's been a brutal week and I'm sort of getting through it," he confessed before showing a glimpse of his injuries. "I cannot tell you the importance of wearing a helmet."

Alongside the video, Ramsay shared a snapshot of himself dressed in his gear before the bike ride and an "after" image of his tattered cycling outfit and shredded helmet. He addressed the extent of his injuries in the post's caption.

"I'm doing okay and did not break any bones or suffer any major injuries, but I am a bit bruised up, looking like a purple potato," he wrote. "I'm thankful for all the doctors, nurses, and staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London who looked after me and checked me out, but most thankful for my helmet that saved my life."
