Heartbreakers, then and now

The 2001 comedy Heartbreakers united sci-fi icon Sigourney Weaver and '90s teen idol Jennifer Love Hewitt as a mother-daughter con artist duo who seduce wealthy men for their own gain. Moderately successful with audiences and critics at the time of its release, Heartbreakers built a cult following over the years. Catch up with the cast of Heartbreakers decades later, ahead.

Sigourney Weaver (Max Conners)

Sigourney Weaver's post-Alien career includes everything from romantic comedies like Heartbreakers, to indie flicks like 2003's Tadpole, to mega-budget blockbusters like James Cameron's 2009 epic Avatar.

Weaver capitalized on her genre icon status with a cameo in the 2012 satire The Cabin in the Woods, and returned to the world of Pandora with 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water. She has also taken on more traditional dramatic roles, including those in My Salinger Year (2020), The Good House (2022), and Call Jane (2022).

Jennifer Love Hewitt (Page Conners)

Following film roles in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) and Heartbreakers, Jennifer Love Hewitt has largely returned to TV, going back to the medium that originally made her a star on Fox's Party of Five.

The actress headlined CBS' Emmy-nominated Ghost Whisperer for five seasons from 2005 to 2010, and she received a Golden Globe nod for her performance in the 2010 television film The Client List, which later spawned a short-lived Lifetime series by the same name. She stars on Fox's 9-1-1 as dispatcher Maddie Buckley.

Ray Liotta (Dean Cumanno)

After wooing Sigourney Weaver in Heartbreakers, Goodfellas star Ray Liotta earned an Independent Spirit award nomination for Best Supporting Male in the 2002 crime drama Narc, which he also produced.

Further cementing himself as a genre staple, Liotta starred in similar crime thrillers like Slow Burn (2005), Smokin' Aces (2006), Killing Them Softly (2012), Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014), and Kill the Messenger (2014) prior to landing a leading role on NBC's Jennifer Lopez cop drama Shades of Blue.

He went on to have key roles in Marriage Story (2019), No Sudden Move (2021), and The Many Saints of Newark (2021). Liotta died in May 2022 at the age of 67; some of his final credits include the Apple TV+ miniseries Black Bird and the 2023 film Cocaine Bear, both released posthumously.

Jason Lee (Jack Withrowe)

After landing a supporting role in Cameron Crowe's 2000 film Almost Famous, Jason Lee was featured in three major films in 2001: Vanilla Sky, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and as Jennifer Love Hewitt's love interest in Heartbreakers.

Lee earned two Golden Globe nominations for his work on the NBC comedy My Name Is Earl, and has starred in four Alvin and the Chipmunks films, each of which has earned over $200 million at the worldwide box office since 2007. His voice work includes playing Syndrome in The Incredibles (2004), the title role in Underdog (2007), and Charlie on We Bare Bears.

Anne Bancroft (Gloria Vogal)

Anne Bancroft headed into Heartbreakers at the tail end of an illustrious career that featured roles on stage and screen, most notably playing Mrs. Robinson in the 1967 film The Graduate. Bancroft joined Heartbreakers' Oscar-validated cast (Sigourney Weaver had three nominations upon starring, while Gene Hackman had already won two before signing on) after winning her own Academy Award for 1962's The Miracle Worker.

Heartbreakers was Bancroft's final live-action role in a theatrical motion picture, as the actress died of cancer in 2005. Prior to her death, she lent her voice to the animated film Delgo, which also features the voice of her Heartbreakers costar, Jennifer Love Hewitt. Delgo was released in 2008, three years after Bancroft's death.

Gene Hackman (William B. Tensy)

Two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman starred as William B. Tensy, an ill-fated tobacco titan in Heartbreakers.

Though his career includes roles in The French Connection (1971), Hoosiers (1986), and Unforgiven (1992), the actor has repeatedly stated that he no longer wishes to act, retiring from the screen after his 2004 role in Welcome to Mooseport. Since his retirement, Hackman has co-written several novels, including Escape From Andersonville, Justice for None, and Wake of the Perdido Star.

Nora Dunn (Miss Madress)

Following her supporting role as Mr. Tensy's housekeeper in Heartbreakers, Nora Dunn reteamed with costar Gene Hackman for a small role in the 2003 film Runaway Jury.

Dunn previously made headlines as a cast member of Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1990, famously boycotting an episode of the show that was to feature comedian Andrew Dice Clay as its host. Following her refusal to perform in the episode, Dunn was not asked to join the cast for the following season. In later years, Dunn has played recurring roles on TV shows like Entourage, Home Economics, and the Disney Channel series Best Friends Whenever.

Julio Oscar Mechoso (Leo)

Following his supporting role as a security guard in Heartbreakers, Julio Oscar Mechoso acted in dozens of projects in film and television.

He appeared on series such as FX's Nip/Tuck and CBS' The Big Bang Theory, and in films like Machete Kills (2013), directed by Robert Rodriguez, and 2014's Cake opposite Jennifer Aniston. Mechoso died in 2017 at the age of 62.

Sarah Silverman (Linda)

Though her role in 2001's Heartbreakers was small (she played a waitress), Sarah Silverman's career as one of the leading women of comedy blossomed throughout the 2000s thanks to her 2005 stand-up comedy feature special, Jesus Is Magic, and a starring role on her own Comedy Central show, The Sarah Silverman Program, from 2007 to 2010.

Silverman was nominated for an Emmy for her performance on The Sarah Silverman Program, and also won two: one for writing the music and lyrics to the 2008 comedy song "I'm F---ing Matt Damon" and another for writing the 2013 HBO comedy special Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles.

Her film roles include 2012's Wreck-It Ralph (and its 2018 sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet), 2014's A Million Ways to Die in the West, the 2015 independent drama I Smile Back (which earned her a SAG award nomination), 2021's Don't Look Up, and 2022's Marry Me.

Zach Galifianakis (Bill)

Zach Galifianakis had a small role as a friend of Jack's in Heartbreakers, and reunited with his costar Sarah Silverman for a 2007 episode of the comedian's television show The Sarah Silverman Program, in which he played a man experiencing homelessness.

Shortly thereafter, Galifianakis landed his breakout role of Alan in the 2009 comedy The Hangover, which spawned two sequels that individually grossed over $300 million at the worldwide box office. The actor went on to play major parts in films like 2012's The Campaign and the 2014 Best Picture winner Birdman.

Galifianakis then headlined the FX comedy series Baskets, which aired from 2016 to 2019 and scored him an Emmy nomination. He has lent his voice to Bob's Burgers, The Lego Batman Movie (2017), Missing Link (2019), and Ron's Gone Wrong (2021).

Carrie Fisher (Mrs. Surpin)

Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher's long list of cameos in film and television shows includes a small role in Heartbreakers as a divorce attorney.

Following the film's 2001 release, Fisher also appeared in another film starring a Heartbreakers alum, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which features Jason Lee in a supporting part. Fisher published a memoir based on her one-woman stage show, titled Wishful Drinking, in 2009, and, in 2010, HBO produced a documentary by the same name, which chronicled the show.

Fisher returned to the blockbuster scene to reprise her role of Leia Organa in 2015's Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, which has grossed over $2 billion worldwide, as well as 2017's Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi. Fisher died in December 2016 at the age of 60.
