Full House actor reveals original plan for D.J.'s boyfriend before cancellation

David Lipper played Viper in four episodes of the show's eighth and final season.

Full House almost had one more love story.

David Lipper, the actor who played Viper, romantic interest to D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure), revealed on the latest episode of the Full House Rewind podcast that he was slated to have a bigger part in D.J.'s storyline, had the sitcom gone not been canceled after eight seasons. As it was, Lipper appeared in four episodes of final season, which ran from 1994 to 1995, and he returned for two episodes of the revival series Fuller House.

"I was slated to be her next boyfriend going on and on for the rest of the series," Lipper told the show's host, Dave "Uncle Joey" Coulier. "Until they found out they were gonna be canceled."

Lipper's final appearance came in the episode "D.J.'s Choice," a half-hour in which D.J. felt pressured to choose between tattooed rocker Viper and rich kid Nelson (Jason Marsden), who'd made the romantic gesture of hiring Frankie Valli to sing to her. In the end, D.J. pulled a Kelly Taylor and decided to take some time for herself.

"She was gonna make a decision between Nelson and me, because I dumped her, and then I wanted her back," Lipper said on the podcast. "And then, it was gonna be me, but then she picked nobody because the show was ending."

As we know from the sequel series Fuller House, which for five seasons from 2016 to 2020, D.J. ended up with her high school boyfriend Steve (Scott Weinger) anyway.

Still, Lipper said that his brief time on the show continues to affect his life. He's still in touch with Bure, John Stamos (Uncle Jesse), and Jodie Sweetin, who played D.J.'s younger sister Stephanie. And the show has brought him a lot of attention over the years.

"I get recognized more from Full House than the 60 movies I've done since put together," Lipper said.
