The best Korra and Asami moments from The Legend of Korra

In honor of their first date, a look back at the couple's history

The Legend of Korra, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko's much-acclaimed follow-up to their popular Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, ended in 2014 by finally pairing up its female leads: The powerful, headstrong Avatar Korra and the beautiful industrialist Asami Sato. Earlier this week, EW previewed the first issue of the much-anticipated comic book sequel to the show, in which Korra and Asami finally get to enjoy a lovely vacation in the Spirit World.

In honor of the release, EW went back and compiled the very best Korra-Asami moments from over the course of The Legend of Korra. Check those out below.

Their First Meeting

Korra and Asami didn't start off on the best of terms. Asami had started dating Korra's friend Mako after crashing into him on the street, and since Korra still harbored her own crush on Mako, they were bound to clash a little. Competition over Mako's affection would color the first season or two of Korra and Asami's relationship, though they also grew to appreciate each other as friends in their own right—and more importantly, as teammates in Team Avatar's fight for justice and balance.

Going for a Spin

Asami may not have bending powers like the rest of Team Avatar, but she's not useless. She first proved this to Korra (who initially saw her as no more than a prissy rival for Mako's love) by taking the Avatar for a spin in her own "Sato-mobile." After a thrilling race, Korra admitted that "I had you pegged wrong." Both of them, it turned out, preferred racing and fighting to stuff like "makeovers."

Clearing the Air

After two seasons of the Korra-Asami-Mako love triangle, the two women finally put it behind them in the opening to season 3. Taking a drive through Republic City, Korra and Asami joked about their past entanglements with Mako and relished in their own friendship. "Whatever happened with Mako, I'm glad it hasn't come between us," Korra admitted. She then got so distracted looking at Asami that she crashed straight into one of Republic City's new Spirit World vines.

Battle Couple

Korra and Asami are just as good at fighting together as talking. While collecting a tax shipment for the Earth Queen, Korra and Asami ran straight into a crew of punk bikers straight out of Mad Max: Fury Road. Though their earthbender escort fled in terror, the two women teamed up to make short work of their foes – thanks to a combination of earthbending, electric shock gloves, and even some high-flying acrobatics. Now that's teamwork.

Big Reunion

After a long three years — during which Korra chopped her hair short, renounced her title, and start fights in bending cage matches — the young Avatar finally returns to Republic City, where she's once again reunited with her friends. The episode sees Korra greet Asami with a long hug and the non-bender compliments the blushing Avatar's new hairdo. It's worth noting that even Mako, who dated both Korra and Asami, later noticed the tension between both characters over dinner.

EPISODE: Season 4, Episode 7

Tea Break

While this moment may not seem significant, the tea break does highlight the couple's growing closeness as Asami seeks out Korra on Air Temple Island and bring her a hot cup of tea. Korra then tells her that she doesn't think she can help the world, especially since her actions have caused it trouble in the past. However, Asami disagrees and begins highlighting all the good the Avatar has accomplished over the years.

Heart-to-Heart and Hug

It's no surprise that the TV series finale had some major moments that signified Korra and Asami's growing feelings for one another—especially in the final minutes. Asami told Korra that losing her would have been just as big a loss for her as the death of her father, to which Korra offers her condolences and hugs her grieving friend.

Officially Hand-in-Hand

In the last few minutes of the animated TV series, Asami mentions that she could really use a vacation after the events of the last couple of months. This inspires Korra to suggest that the two of them do exactly that. Going off of Asami's desire to visit the Spirit World, the pair heads to the newly formed Spirit Portal, holding hands as they step into it, and gazing into each other's eyes in the final seconds.
