More Blue Bloods? Paramount exec teases 'franchise extension' ahead of series finale

Hear us out: "Young Frank."

More Blue Bloods shows may be in the works at Paramount.

At Paramount Global's shareholder meeting Wednesday, co-CEO Brian Robbins listed the show among the company's valuable intellectual properties that will see new projects in the future. "We are building tomorrow's billion-dollar brands right now" he said. "In TV, new franchise extensions are coming for Dexter, Billions, and Blue Bloods, and CBS' hit Fire Country shows huge promise."

Representatives for CBS and Paramount didn't immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for clarification.

Robbins' comment would seem to suggest a shift in executive attitudes toward Blue Bloods, as CBS announced that the series would end with its 14th season last fall and repeatedly squashed hopes that it might be renewed.

"It is important to give [the] show the sendoff it deserves," CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach said last month. "We love this cast, we love their passion for the show. All shows have to come to an end. It's important to us to refresh the schedule. We are going to end the show come December."

Numerous Blue Bloods cast members have campaigned to keep the show running after the second half of season 14 wraps up in the fall, including Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg.

"I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses," Selleck said last month. "We're the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast. We're winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: We aren't sliding off down a cliff. We're doing good shows, and still holding our place. So, I don't know. You tell me!"

Blue Bloods follows the escapades of the Reagan family, a New York law enforcement dynasty headed by patriarch Frank (Selleck), the police commissioner. His family members are played by Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, and Andrew Terraciano.

There's no information yet on what a Blue Bloods extension might look like, but it would make sense if Paramount and CBS opted to create a prequel series focusing on a young version of Frank or Frank's father, Henry, the former police commissioner played by Len Cariou who served in the NYPD for decades. After all, it's the same network that greenlit Young Sheldon, NCIS: Origins, and the Yellowstone spinoffs 1883 and 1923.
