Brad Pitt’s real-life romance with Angelina Jolie might be coming to an end, but his on-screen chemistry with Marion Cotillard is heating up in the new trailer for the World War II-era thriller Allied.

The Robert Zemeckis-directed period film follows an American intelligence officer (Pitt) who falls for a French Resistance fighter (Cotillard) while on a deadly mission in North Africa. The pair eventually reunites in London, though their romantic bond is threatened as the war around them intensifies.

Pitt and Cotillard, both Oscar winners, headline the film, while supporting actors Lizzy Caplan, Jared Harris, and Matthew Goode round out the film’s cast. Allied was produced by Graham King, who told PEOPLE the film’s principal actors “immediately had the utmost respect for each other,” and that, in character, “their chemistry was electric.”

STARRING: Brad Pitt, Marion CotillardDIRECTED BY: Robert ZemeckisRELEASE DATE: 11/23In Robert Zemeckis’ romantic wartime thriller, set in 1942 Casablanca and London, Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are anything but the usual suspects. In fact, they’re undercover operatives — he’s from Canada, she’s from France — with secrets to uphold and romance to pursue. Daniel Smith

Paramount’s expertly timed release of the upcoming film’s trailer falls on the same day news broke that Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt after two years of marriage.

Though the internet was quick to suspect Pitt and Cotillard might have become an item during production on Allied, as a New York Post article quoted a source who claimed Pitt was “fooling around with” the La vie en Rose actress on set, an unidentified party close to the couple told PEOPLE the rumor is completely false.

Allied hits theaters during Oscar season on Nov. 23. Watch the film’s new teaser below.
