Sesame Street clears up cast change misunderstandings

Looks like Sesame Street might not be saying goodbye to original cast members Bob McGrath, Emilio Delgado, and Roscoe Orman after all.

In a statement on Wednesday, Sesame Workshop CEO Jeff Dunn clarified the “misunderstandings” surrounding the departures of McGrath, Delgado, and Orman from the series, saying, “They are, and always will be, a key part of the Sesame family.”

“In 2014, when we first began producing the current half-hour show format, we let all of our cast members know of the shorter story lines and, therefore, reduced appearances. However, our production team also intentionally left the door open for all actors to continue to appear,” Dunn wrote. “In our latest season, the story lines written did not include appearances by these three actors and we certainly could have done a better job of communicating with them about our ongoing episode plans.”

Dunn went on to say he’s been in touch with all three actors and plans to meet face-to-face to discuss their futures on the show “in a way that honors their historic contributions.”

McGrath first broke the news of leaving Sesame Street during a live podcast for the MuppetCast, saying he’d been let go after HBO acquired the series. The show then said the cast changes had nothing to do with HBO, maintaining that Sesame Workshop held creative control over the show.
