EW's editorial guidelines Published on July 1, 2016 05:44PM EDT Andrew Garfield has enlisted in Mel Gibson’s upcoming World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge. Garfield stars as real-life conscientious objector Desmond Doss, an army medic who supported the war but refused to carry a weapon, believing that it was morally wrong to kill another human being. As a result, he became the only American soldier to fight on the front lines of World War II without a weapon, and during the deadly battle of Okinawa, Doss risked his life countless times to evacuate American soldiers from behind enemy lines, all without carrying a gun. Doss eventually became the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, and now, Gibson is telling his story in Hacksaw Ridge, his first directing project in 10 years. (Gibson most recently stepped behind the camera for Apocalypto in 2006). A newly released poster for the film, below, highlights Garfield as Doss. Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, and Teresa Palmer also star, and Hacksaw Ridge will hit theaters on Nov. 4.
