Speaking to investors on Tuesday, NBCUniversal chief Steve Burke was quoted as saying Illumination Entertainment, which has partnered with NBCUniversal since 2007 to produce animated family films, would take a stab at figuring out where Shrek could fit in as a property. “[Chris Meledandri, Illumination founder and CEO] is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises,” Burke said (via Deadline). In addition to Shrek, DreamWorks Animation is also home to the How to Train Your Dragon series of films. The last Shrek film, Shrek Forever After premiered in 2010; a spin-off focused on the franchise’s Puss in Boots character, called Puss in Boots, arrived in 2011. All told, the Shrek films have grossed more than $1.4 billion at the domestic box office.
