Mel Gibson claims he could have played Thor's father

The next Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok, will soar into theaters on Nov. 3, 2017, with a returning cast that includes Chris Hemsworth as the hammer-wielding Asgardian, Tom Hiddleston as his villainous brother Loki, and Anthony Hopkins as their father, Odin. But, according to Mel Gibson, he could have been the one playing that intergalactic patriarch.

During an interview with The Guardian, Gibson was asked if he was ever approached for a superhero film. “Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor’s dad,” he said. “But I didn’t do it.”

The actor was also asked what he thinks of the current wave of superhero movies.

“Some are good,” Gibson told The Guardian. “Some are kind of funny … Guardians of the Galaxy. Or the first Iron Man. And some of them are just like [retreads]. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times … There is a slight shift in film. But, then again, I think all films are suffering from people not being able to now open them with their name. It’s a different kind of business these days.”

Gibson was recently at the Cannes Film Festival promoting his new film Blood Father, also starring Erin Moriarty, Elisabeth Röhm, and William H. Macy. You can read more of his interview with The Guardian here.
