Despite having no formal training, Srinivasa Ramanujan proved himself to be a brilliant thinker in the field of advanced mathematics in the early 20th century. From his meager upbringing in India, he sailed to England to further his research and shocked even the most brilliant academic minds with his theories. But not immediately.

In The Man Who Knew Infinity, Dev Patel stars as Ramanujan, who rises from being a shipping clerk to being taken under the wing of Cambridge mathematics professor G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons). Hardy hopes to inspect Ramanujan’s revolutionary but undisciplined ways of thinking to see if he’s a genius or a fraud. In the film’s new international trailer, Ramanujan’s fellow classmates and teachers are not so quick to accept his unconventional methods, nor is British society so welcoming to a brown-skinned foreigner.

The Man Who Knew Infinity, directed and written by Matt Brown, also stars Toby Jones, Stephen Fry, and Devika Bhise. The film is set to open in U.K. theaters on April 8 and in the U.S. via IFC Films on April 29.
