When I recently asked a young, up-and-coming director which film he was most looking forward to seeing at this year’s Sundance Festival he had three words: The Greasy Strangler.

Directed by Jim Hosking (The ABCs of Death 2), the film tells the story of Ronnie (Michael St. Michaels) and his browbeaten son Brayden (Sky Elobar), who run L.A.’s best and only disco walking tour. A young female tourist takes the tour, setting off a father-son competition to win her attentions, and marking the appearance of an oily, slimy, inhuman maniac who stalks the night and strangles the innocent, initiating a reign of fear and terror as the infamous Greasy Strangler.

But what has really gotten the horror community salivating about the film is the project’s list of producers and executive producers, a murderers’ row of genre fanatics which includes ABCs of Death overlords Ant Timpson and Tim League, Kill List director Ben Wheatley, and SpectreVision cofounders Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller, and Elijah Wood.

“Jim Hosking is a British commercials and short film director,” Wood told EW at last year’s Stanley Film Festival, before production had begun. “Ant Timpson sent me the script and said, ‘I’d love for you to look at this, I think it could be a really good fit.’ He was like, ‘Prepare yourself, it’s really something. [Laughs] I read the script and I f—ing pissed myself. It is honestly the most — I don’t know — the most f—ed up, funny, disturbing, gross thing I’ve ever read. At its core it’s a relationship between a father and a son. That tells you nothing. And it was sort of on me to get these guys to read it and get them on board the Greasy Strangler train.”

The Greasy Strangler will make its world premiere as part of Sundance’s Midnight Films program on Jan. 22. Above and below, you can see exclusive stills from the film featuring Michael, Elobar, and Elizabeth de Razzo.
