PBS: Queen Victoria miniseries will air in Downton Abbey time slot, stars Jenna Coleman

PBS has added another period drama to the Masterpiece roster.

The network has acquired Victoria, an eight-part miniseries starring Doctor Who alum Jenna Coleman. The series, which originates from U.K. station ITV, will debut in 2017 in the same Sunday time slot that Downton Abbey has occupied for six years.

Victoria follows the titular queen — played by Coleman — beginning from her ascension to the throne in 1837, through to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.

“Downton Abbey has proved that millions of viewers will turn up year after year for a beautifully crafted period drama,” said Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena on Monday. “Victoria has it all: a riveting script, brilliant cast, and spectacular locations. And it’s a true story! This is exactly the kind of programming Masterpiece fans will love.”

Victoria also stars Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle) as Lord Melbourne, Queen Victoria’s first prime minister and friend; Tom Hughes as Prince Albert; Alex Jennings as Leopold I, King of Belgium and uncle to both Victoria and Albert; Paul Rhys (Being Human) as Sir John Conroy, and Peter Firth (MI-5) as the Duke of Cumberland.
