Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Jurassic World congratulates J.J. Abrams film on box office success

Even the king of the dinosaurs (and the 2015 box office) is gracious in defeat.

The global debut for Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit the $529 million mark, trampling over Jurassic World‘s previous record of $525 million. Frank Marshall, producer of the Chris Pratt-led dino extravaganza, congratulated the efforts of director J.J. Abrams and Co. with a lighthearted Twitter post.

“Cheers to J.J., [Lucasfilm president] Kathy [Kennedy], the cast and crew, and [Disney/Lucasfilm] marketing teams,” Marshall wrote on Twitter. The message was accompanied with an image of a T-rex awarding BB-8 with a medal that read, “Universal, Steve [Spielberg], Frank, and [Jurassic World director] Colin [Trevorrow] congratulate Star Wars: The Force Awakens on the biggest opening weekend in galactic history.”

When Jurassic World surpassed Marvel’s The Avengers’ record for highest opening weekend earlier this year, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige offered a similar congratulatory response on Twitter.

The success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens also makes it the first movie to break $100 million in a single day, in addition to earning the biggest domestic opening ever with $248 million over the weekend.

Both this film and Jurassic World have moved on in the race for 2016 Oscar nominations in the visual effects category. The Academy announced both were among the top 10 films up for consideration, which will then be whittled down to five when the noms are officially announced on Jan. 14.
