One Direction announced Monday that “History” will be the third single from the band’s fifth album, Made in the A.M, despite revealing back in November that “Infinity” would follow “Drag Me Down” and “Perfect.”

In a tweet, the band explained that the choice was made due to the massively positive fan reaction that followed the band’s performance on the finale of The X Factor U.K. on Sunday. One has to wonder what might happen to the music video that was reportedly shot — earlier this month, fans circulated what appeared to be a notice of filming.

“Infinity” had already been released as a promotional single back in September, and “History” is a more fitting choice for a single now that the band is officially on hiatus: The song is about the relationships within the band as well as an ode to the fans who launched them to stratospheric success.

“We’ve all been through this together and we’ll never forget it but also we’ve been in this relationship with the fans,” Louis Tomlinson previously told EW. Liam Payne echoed his bandmate’s sentiments in conversation with EW, describing the song as a “modern version” of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” adding, “More than anything, the song is about the way the fans and everyone have created this massive thing — One Direction — over the past five years.”

The song was written and composed by Payne, Tomlinson, John Ryan, Julian Bunetta, and Ed Drewett. The chorus was recorded with the help of a few lucky fans who were taken into the studio by Bunetta and Niall Horan. “That was actually my idea,” Payne said. He wasn’t able to go himself, but “it was nothing personal,” he joked. “It’s really great because obviously that song is mainly about the fans and what they’ve done; I think it was important that they were a part of it, to close the album.”

And now, the fans are a part of what Payne described as “a little bit of closure for this chapter of One Direction.”
