TV Article You're the Worst boss previews troubles ahead for just about everyone By Natalie Abrams Natalie Abrams Senior Writer EW's editorial guidelines Published on November 17, 2015 12:00PM EST Photo: Byron Cohen/FXX FXX’s You’re the Worst has gone from little-known comedy gem to one of the most talked about and critically acclaimed series thanks, in part, to a stellar second season that has deftly delved into the subject of clinical depression without losing its comedic edge. As the series heads toward its finale, EW caught up with executive producer Stephen Falk to get the scoop on what’s in store for the self-absorbed, yet lovable quartet: Gretchen With each passing episode, Gretchen (Aya Cash) has fallen deeper into her depression, causing her to be in an almost emotionless state. At what point will her desire to push everyone away cause the group to give up on her? “It’s certainly something that has to be acknowledged, that it is a very hard thing to deal with when someone is constantly pushing people away,” Falk says. “Whether it’s genuine go away from me or if it’s a test or literally all they can say at that moment is circumstantial. Particularly when you have narcissistic people — at least Jimmy [Chris Geere] and Gretchen certainly are — that does beg the question: What are you supposed to do as the other person?” On that note, expect an intervention of sorts soon. Jimmy With Gretchen pulling further and further away from him, Jimmy has grown closer to local bar owner Nina (Grey’s Anatomy’s Tessa Ferrer). Will he actual consider cheating? “Jimmy’s in the weird position where he’s with someone who is actively pushing him away,” Falk says. “Given their history, there is probably only so much of that a person can take, particularly someone like Jimmy. At the end of the day, people will be satisfied. There may be the moment where people throw things at the TV.” Lindsay In the wake of her estranged husband leaving her for another woman, Lindsay (Kether Donohue) struggles to be an adult. “There are certain aspects of Lindsay’s character in which she’s very adult; she does understand life to a certain extent,” Falk says. “Certainly she doesn’t know boring things like when to put oil in her car, but she does know how to be a good friend to Gretchen when her depression comes back. I’m interested in people who have that duality, who have that ability to be surprisingly evolved in one area and then completely helpless and childlike in another.” But Lindsay may be forced to grow up rather quickly when her turkey baster incident — a.k.a. when she tried to inseminate herself — comes into play. “Yeah, we’ll see some sort of payoff for it,” Falk says. “It wasn’t just a dumb joke.” Edgar War veteran Edgar (Desmin Borges) wades deeper into the relationship waters with Dorothy (Collette Wolfe), and finds himself in the process. “Dorothy is invited to a comedy BBQ, and Edgar goes with her and tries to fit in, and it doesn’t go well,” Falk says. “We’ll see that continuing effort of Edgar trying to figure out who he is, who he should be, what defines him, what parts of his personality to let go of and what parts of his personality people are turned off by. Complicating all that is the fact that he’s with a new person. There will definitely be complications for him, but I want Edgar to be happy so much. It’s my job to complicate his life, but as a viewer, every time I see him go through hard things, it breaks my heart.” You’re the Worst airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. ET on FXX.
