The Back to the Future movies failed to predict the rise of social networks, but Facebook users still have plenty of love for the time-tripping franchise.

Facebook has announced that some 27 million people — a number greater than the population of the Seoul or Mexico City metropolitan areas — generated 45 million posts, comments, and likes related to Wednesday’s Back to the Future Day (so named because it’s the same date Marty McFly and Doc travel to in the movie trilogy).

The social network added that 1 million people globally RSVP’d for 6,200 BTTF-themed Facebook events, and that the top five countries talking about Back to the Future were (in order) the United States, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

In the meantime, the Back to the Future trilogy earned $4.85 million at the worldwide box office in limited release Wednesday. The films will continue to show through the weekend.
