EW's editorial guidelines Published on August 4, 2015 06:01PM EDT The first trailer has arrived for Stonewall, Roland Emmerich’s film depicting the titular 1969 riots that helped launch the LGBT rights movement. The trailer opens with historical footage of other fights for equality —the civil rights movement and women’s and gay rights, among them — as remarks from President Barack Obama are heard in the background. “Our nation was founded on a bedrock principle that we are all created equal,” he says. “Seneca Falls, Selma and Stonewall … ordinary people can do extraordinary things.” Stonewall follows a fictional young man named Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine), who flees his home for New York City in 1969 and finds refuge at the Stonewall in the days and weeks leading up to the riots.
