Todd Haynes developing adaptation of Brian Selznick's 'Wonderstruck'

In the wake of Carol‘s successful debut at Cannes, attention has already turned to director Todd Haynes’s next project. Empire Online reports that Haynes plans to adapt the children’s book Wonderstruck, by The Invention of Hugo Cabret author Brian Selznick.

Wonderstruck follows the intertwined narratives of two deaf children, Ben and Rose. Ben lives with his family in Minnesota in 1977, and runs off to New York following his mother’s death when a mysterious note shows up. Rose, who is locked in a house in 1927 New Jersey, also escapes to New York to see her idol, film actress Lillian Mayhew. Reportedly, Haynes has already finished the screenplay for the film, which will be produced by Haynes’ regular partner-in-crime Christine Vachon.

Currently, there is no timeline for production, though potential casting is rumored to be on the agenda. Before tackling Wonderstruck, the director is set to take on a Peggy Lee biopic starring Reese Witherspoon, as well as a television series based on the 2012 documentary The Source Family.
