Nelson talks 'Coach' sequel: 'It's risky' By Ariana Bacle Published on April 12, 2015 12:00PM EDT Photo: Everett Collection NBC recently announced they’ll be bringing Coach back to TV in the form of a sequel to the original series—and Parenthood star Craig T. Nelson will be coming along for the ride. “I’m a little bit anxious and hopeful. It’s risky,” he said at Saturday’s TV Land Awards. “I love the challenge.” Nelson played the title character in the original series, which ran on ABC from 1989 to 1997. In the new series, his character, now retired, will make a comeback to the game as his son’s assistant coach at an Ivy League school. Nineties TV and current TV are very different, though, and Nelson’s aware they’ll have to make some changes. “You couldn’t do it now in the same form at all,” he said. “I think what we’ve come up with, hopefully we can write to and give an opportunity for some new characters.” NBC has ordered 13 episodes, but there’s no word yet on when they will premiere.
