Modest Mouse might call its 2016 record 'Whateber'

There will (probably) not be another eight-year gap between albums from Modest Mouse, who released Strangers to Ourselves earlier this month. Speaking to Hot Press, lead singer Isaac Brock said the follow-up is likely to hit in 2016. “We basically made two records at the same time,” Brock said. “Which, if people look at it that way, cuts down the amount of time it took us to make this record in HALF, man!”

And if you had heard the rumors that Nirvana’s bassist Krist Novoselic was recording with the band, you were probably let down when he wasn’t carving out the low end anywhere on Ourselves. But hope isn’t lost. “We ended up finishing tracking with one of his songs that will end up on the next record,” promises Brock.

As for that potential title, Whateber, Brock is making a statement on the trolling he gets for his long album titles (but seriously, This Is A Long Drive For Someone To Think Nothing About…): “I feel terrible mentioning, because I might actually call the next record this… I thought, ‘Okay, I always put out these long f–king titles, and I wanna not do that.’ And so I came up with this cover art which Epic were like ‘You could do that but we can’t sell that anywhere’. But the title was just going to be Whatever. And I was going to misspell ‘Whatever’. You know like, just have it be ‘Whabever’. I just wanted to go as dumb as f–king possible. Mainly to be antagonistic and just ‘cos I kinda thought it was funny.”

Whateber they call it, we’ll be waiting to hear it.
