Well, that didn’t last long. Weeks after the Keating Five did such a bang-up job of hiding Sam’s remains (sarcasm), the police have unearthed his body, which will send How to Get Away with Murder’s killer group into a frenzy as they are faced with the very real possibility of getting caught.

“Episode 11 was all about keeping the lid on the pot that’s about to boil over,” showrunner Pete Nowalk explains. “Once the body is discovered, that lid has exploded and hits the ceiling and there is water everywhere. They have to very quickly work on the next step of this clean up.”

First on the to-do list is keeping their stories straight as the investigation into Sam’s death heats up. “The police who have probably been circling all of our students and Annalise [Viola Davis] are now going to be quite in their face,” Nowalk says. “Everything they do from this moment on could be evidence against them—their behaviors, their reactions, what they say, who they call could all become potential evidence if they ever become suspects in the murder. They’re walking on eggshells and having to put on their best face, their best mask, more than ever. There’s no time to think about what to do. They just have to be their best criminal selves. Everything is on acid now, basically.”

While the audience knows Wes (Alfred Enoch) ultimately is to blame, Hannah (Marcia Gay Harden) will point the finger at Annalise, accusing the law professor of murdering her brother. “Annalise can’t keep Hannah calm anymore,” Nowalk says. “Having his body be found blows up the entire theory that he ran away.”

But Hannah isn’t the only one that senses something amiss. Lest we forget, Bonnie (Liza Weil) was left in the dark about Murder Night despite Annalise telling Frank (Charlie Weber) the truth. “Bonnie is smart, so the news of Sam’s body being found is going to rock her and affect her in a way that’s different from every other person in that house,” Nowalk says. “She and Asher [Matt McGorry] are the only ones who don’t know exactly what happened. Bonnie working for Annalise and being smart, her antennae are up. We’re going to watch her react to the body emotionally, but also intelligently. How she reacts is going to surprise a lot of the characters.”

How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
