TV Article R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe now a part of NYU By Eric Renner Brown Published on October 10, 2014 08:06PM EDT Photo: Bobby Bank/Getty Images What do you do after your band—that band being iconic, 31-year-old R.E.M.—calls it quits? You teach. Michael Stipe, R.E.M.’s former frontman, is now an artist-in-residence and teacher-in-residence at a new NYU exhibit called “New Sights, New Noise.” Stipe now has a functioning studio at the school’s downtown gallery, which is open from from 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. Don’t count on seeing Stipe, though. He’ll be working when the gallery is closed, and leaving his studio in disarray at the end of his sessions so that, as NYU puts it, visitors can understand his “remarkably prolific, varied and non-hierarchical way of seeing, thinking and making.” Stipe will also collaborate with guest artists during the exhibit’s six-week run, posing questions with them to classes of students, who will then generate images and GIFs responding to the prompts.
