'American Psycho' musical canceled at Second Stage

The American Psycho musical will not have an off-Broadway run at Second Stage Theatre after all. Though it was scheduled for a run in 2015, Second Stage announced Friday it would not be producing the show, which premiered in London. “We are disappointed that we will not be producing American Psycho this season, but the rights holders, Act 4 Entertainment, have decided to not move forward with the production at Second Stage,” Artistic Director Carole Rothman said in a statement. “We will be announcing a new production in its place in the coming weeks.”

The production may, however, be looking directly to Broadway. Two unnamed Broadway executives told The New York Times that Act 4 “had been talking to New York producers recently about shifting gears and bypassing Second Stage in favor of a Broadway run.” Act 4 did not immediately return a request for comment from EW.

Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith starred as investment banker/serial killer Patrick Bateman in London, where its reception varied. Variety said that “beneath the highly polished surface there’s little drama or, crucially, danger.” On the other hand, The Guardian gave it four stars, explaining that “it works superbly thanks to Rupert Goold’s stylish production, Duncan Sheik’s music and lyrics and Matt Smith’s beautifully defined performance as the deluded hero.” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa adapted Bret Easton Ellis’ novel for the stage.

Deadline had reported last month that Benjamin Walker, who participated in a workshop production of the musical, was attached to take up the lead in its U.S. debut. According to the Times‘ sources, Walker’s “deal with Second Stage was done,” but he was still in talks with Act 4 about his role if the show were to go to Broadway.
