'Paradise': Julianne Hough stars in Diablo Cody's directorial debut

Diablo Cody’s directorial debut stars Julianne Hough as a evangelical Christian named Lamb whose faith is shaken after two-thirds of her body — but not her face, thank God! — is burned in a plane crash. In the new trailer for Paradise, she shocks her church congregation with her doubts before heading to Las Vegas to take a walk on the wild side. (FYI, Paradise, Nev., is the sub-community of Las Vegas that boasts the Strip.) Her bucket list of worldly pleasures is pretty tame (e.g., “smoke a fatty,” “cut hair,” “burn flag”), but with the help of her Rock of Ages co-star Russell Brand and Octavia Spencer, I suspect our little Lamb is going to find herself.

I want to warn you, though: This trailer does contain imagery that some readers will find upsetting. I don’t think Nick Offerman’s character was also in the plane accident, but more than two-thirds of his most iconic feature was lost in the making of this movie. I’m sorry. That’s all I can say.

Paradise premieres on DirecTV this Friday, Aug. 9 before getting a theatrical release Oct. 18. (“Most directors force you to LEAVE THE HOUSE to see their movie,” Cody recently tweeted. “You can watch mine naked with a bag of Mint Milanos.)
