'X-Men: Days of Future Past': Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Iceman returning

We already know that Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, and Hugh Jackman will be returning to play Professor X, Magneto, and Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the sequel to X-Men: First Class, which is also a prequel to X-Men and maybe also an alternate-universe sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand. (It has nothing to do with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, because everyone knows that movie never happened, RIGHT?) Well, this weekend, returning franchise helmer Bryan Singer tweeted that three more original-trilogy X-People would be returning to the franchise. “Very excited to welcome #annapaquin, @ellenpage & @shawnrashmore to #XMen #DaysofFuturePast,” Singer said, confirming the return of the actors who essayed the roles of Rogue, Kitty Pryde, and Iceman. (Singer also said, “Thank you @BrettRatner for letting them live,” a reference to the Cyclops-murdering director of X-Men: The Last Stand.)

It’s still not clear how the original-trilogy X-Men will fit into the film, which — assuming it picks up where First Class left off — is initially set three decades before the first X-Men. The original 1981 comic book storyline “Days of Future Past” featured a dystopian future where mutants were hunted down by fascist killer robots called Sentinels. Assuming that the First Class X-Men will be fighting to avoid a horrible dystopian future featuring the Original Trilogy X-Men, then it would seem that the horrible dystopian future…is our present. Or this could all just be Bryan Singer’s elaborate plan to wipe X-Men: The Last Stand from the timestream.

Still no official word on returns for James Marsden, Halle Berry, or Famke Janssen, although Janssen supposedly filmed a cameo for The Wolverine, the reboot-sequel to the spin-off solo Wolverine franchise, which is also a sequel to The Last Stand, making it technically a septquel and arguably a sidequel. So it is as clear as the summer’s sun.
