'The Wolverine': New motion poster

Motion posters: They’re not just for Bob Marley anymore.

Right on the heels of that new Man of Steel trailer comes a new animated poster for 20th Century Fox’s own tentpole superhero movie. The image pictures Logan — a.k.a. The Wolverine himself — crouching on an elaborately designed roof, high above the dizzying lights and colors of modern-day Tokyo. For added drama, he’s clutching a sword — and being pelted by a torrential downpour. Naturally, he didn’t think to wear a shirt in the storm. Here’s the poster:

Evocative, or overly video game-y? You be the judge!

The Wolverine star Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold said in October that the new film will pick up some time after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), “at a point when the X-Men are gone; Jean Grey is gone; a lot of the ties [Logan] had to the world are gone.” After traveling to Tokyo to train with a samurai warrior, the ex-X-man falls for a local (Tao Okamoto) and finds himself involved in a ruthless gang war. The apparently invincible fighter will also “discover his kryptonite” in this film, according to Jackman.

The Wolverine is set to open July 26, 2013.
