''Invincible'' holds the line

Dave Karger's weekend wrap-up: The Mark Wahlberg football flick ''Invincible'' is No. 1 again, with $15.2 mil over four days

As expected, it was a tight game at the box office this weekend, but Mark Wahlberg and Greg Kinnear’s football drama Invincible held on to the top spot, grossing $15.2 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend, according to studio estimates.

That strong showing brings Invincible’s 11-day total to a decent $37.8 million and was enough to fend off Jason Statham’s latest action flick, Crank, which premiered with $13 million, considerably less than the $20.2 million his Transporter 2 grossed this same weekend last year.

Third place went to Nicolas Cage’s remake of The Wicker Man, with $12 million. Expect a massive drop-off for this film, as its CinemaScore grades were virtual F’s across the board. And the critical-fave indies Little Miss Sunshine (with Kinnear and Steve Carell) and The Illusionist (starring Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti) rounded out the top five, with $9.7 million and $8 million, respectively. Any weekend with two Kinnear films in the top five is fine by us.
