A LIFE LESS ORDINARY

A LIFE LESS ORDINARY Ewan McGregor, Cameron Diaz, Holly Hunter, Delroy Lindo (1997, FoxVideo, R, $103.99) The third feature by Scotland-based director Danny Boyle and writer John Hodge is just as underrated as their two previous works, Shallow Grave and Trainspotting, were overrated. This tale of a down-on-his-luck janitor (McGregor) who ineptly kidnaps the boss’ daughter (Diaz), only to find she’s thrilled to be liberated from her rich-girl prison, veers between exhilarating flights of fancy (the young lovers’ lounge-ludicrous karaoke rendition of ”Beyond the Sea”) and show-offy nonsense (Hunter and Lindo as tough-love guardian angels). Maybe its peculiar whimsy didn’t play well larger than life, but expect it to develop a well-deserved cult following on video. B-
