Rush Hour

Tenor saxist Lovano is the late-blooming young lion of choice these days, with formidable technique and a taste for adventure. This jewel is framed by Ellingtonia — a lushly textured ”Prelude to a Kiss” opens; a pliant solo sax reading of ”Chelsea Bridge” closes. In between is music by Mingus, Monk, and Ornette Coleman, as well as Lovano and Schuller, all neatly outfitted, nostalgic, and up-to-the-minute.
