Trump dance popular at UFC, NFL; what it is and why people are doing it
President-elect Donald Trump's dance moves on rally stages during the election campaign inspired a TikTok trend that went viral and has since spilled over into the sports arenas into what is now a growing celebratory dance craze.
The dance moves imitate Trump swaying his body while shaking his arms back and fourth, fists up, with his head slightly bent down as he's dancing to the music. It usually ends with an imaginary golf swing.
This weekend, UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones broke into "the Trump dance" in the MMA ring after winning his fight against Stipe Miocic. The fighter finished the dance and pointed at Trump sitting ringside. (Trump was in attendance at the MMA event, but did not attend the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight a night earlier.)
"The Trump Dance" was also on full display in multiple end zones of the NFL and and even college football this weekend; Raiders' tight end Brock Bowers, Titans' wide receiver Calvin Ridley and Lions' defensive end Za'Darius Smith, all imitated Trump's dance moves as their celebrated their touchdowns.
NFL 49ers' star Nick Bosa appears to have gotten the trend started last week when he and his teammates did the dance in Week 10 just days after Trump's election win. Bosa has been a big public supporter of Trump, even taking a fine for wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat on the field after a game.
Video clips of Trump dancing during his campaign rallies gave rise to the dance trend on TikTok and other social media sites. Supporters embraced the move leading up to the presidential election. It gained momentum after his win and has since evolved into a celebratory dance, used after a touchdown or a win.
The Trump dance has caught on and spread beyond the United States into other parts of the world as seen during a soccer match in England, where the Barnsley players did the dance after scoring against Cambridge United.
