How does a Jason mask from Friday the 13th, McDonald's connect to October Jackson murders?
Clarion Ledger data shows Jackson saw a low trend of five homicide victims in October 2024 with most victims dying from sustaining multiple wounds.
Clarion Ledger data shows 80% of murder victims in October died from being shot or stabbed multiple times.
October marked the second least deadly month, trailing only February, which had four victims. April remains the most violent month of 2024 with 16 victims.
Multiple gunshot or stab wounds typically indicate an emotional attack or interpersonal violence, which Jackson Police Chief Wade said currently makes up around 60% of Jackson homicides. Interpersonal violence includes personal disputes between romantic partners, family members or friends that turn deadly.
All October murder victims were Black males, with the youngest being 20 years old and the oldest 45 years old. Police have identified and/or arrested suspects in four of the five murder cases as of Nov. 13. Three of the suspects are Black males, and one is a Black female.
Wade, who called for peace in the city, told the Clarion Ledger the department is not sitting idly by as crime "plagues" the community. Wade said the police force implemented at least nine different “strategic approaches” to help reduce crime, starting with JPD "being proactive, not reactive" to criminal activity.
“We are not focused on putting somebody in jail for the weekend,” Wade said. “People who are committing these felonious crimes, we want to get them out of our city and our communities, so that we can move forward with any development and prosperity impacting the quality of life for our citizens."
By the end of October, there were 98 total murders in Jackson. Capitol Police investigated six cases, JPD investigated 91 cases, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation investigated one case.
