Hipgnosis

Hipgnosis oli Ühendkuningriigis Londonis tegutsenud graafikadisainerite rühmitus, mis keskendus heliplaatide ümbriste ja pakendite kujundamisele. 1960. aastate lõpust 1980. aastate alguseni tegutsenud Hipgnosis sai kuulsaks tänu oma fotokesksetele, sageli sürreaalsetele ja psühhedeelsetele ning sageli kiiksuga huumoriga vürtsitatud kujundustele ning meisterlikule fototöötlusele.
Hipgnosist peetakse plaadikujundusvaldkonna kõige mõjukamaks ja olulisemaks uuendajaks.[viide?]
Aastatel 1968–1983 kujundas Hipgnosis ligi 400 plaadiümbrist ansamblitele ja artistidele, nagu näiteks Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, Syd Barrett, Wishbone Ash, Electric Light Orchestra, 10cc, Bad Company ja Black Sabbath.
Hipgnosise teke

Hipgnosise moodustasid 1967. aastal Storm Elvin Thorgerson (28. veebruar 1944 – 18. aprill 2013) ja Aubrey Powell (23. september 1946). Hiljem liitus Hipgnosega Peter Martin Christopherson (27. veebruar 1955 – 25. november 2010).
Hipgnosis sai alguse, kui korterit jaganud Thorgerson ja Powell hakkasid ühiselt kujundama raamatukaasi Thorgersonsi kirjastajast sõbrale. Nime võtsid nad oma elukoha trepikoja seinale joonistatud grafitilt, mille autoriks on pakutud Syd Barretit. Liitsõna esimene silp tähendab trendikust või moodsust, gnosis tähendab aga kreeka keeles teadmist.
Hipgnosise rahvusvaheline läbilöök saabus 1973. aastal Pink Floydi albumi "The Dark Side of the Moon" ja Led Zeppelini albumi "Houses of The Holy" kujundustega.
Stiil
[muuda | muuda lähteteksti]Hipgnosise albumikujundused põhinesid fotograafial. Nende lähenemine ning foto kasutamisviis olid aga väljakujunenud traditsioonist kardinaalselt teistsugune. Kui seni oli kaanefoto eesmärk anda infot artisti kohta, siis Hipgnosis kujundas albumi kui eraldiseisva kunstiteose.
Hipgnosise tuntuimaks kaubamärgiks sai efektsete pimikutrikkide ja julge fototöötluse kasutamine. Tänapäeval ei ole selles midagi märkimisväärset, kuid toona ei olnud kujundajate kasutuses arvuteid, fototöötlusprogrammidest rääkimata.
Hipgnosise töödele oli iseloomulik ka fotode jaoks kallite, töömahukate ja suurejooneliste lavastuste kasutamine. Sageli palgati poseerima näitlejad, pildistamine toimus kauges või eksootilises paigas ning rajati kalleid dekoratsioone.
Hipgnosise kujundusi iseloomustavateks märksõnad on "sürreaalsus", "absurd" ja "grotesk". Kunstnikud, kelle töödega Hipgnosise loomingut võiks võrrelda, on René Magritte ja Salvador Dalí.[viide?]
Hipgnosise kujundustele on iseloomulik ka omapärase, nii-öelda kiiksuga huumori ja visualiseeritud sõnamängude kasutamine.[viide?]
Lisaks albumitele on Hipgnosis kujundanud ka raamatuid ning teinud reklaamklippe. Viimased Hipgnosise kui rühmitise kujundatud albumid ilmusid 1984. aastal.
