The Simple Past Tense


Usos
1. Usamos este tiempo cuando queremos hablar de algo que ha ocurrido en un tiempo específico del
pasado:

(Usualmente agregamos el tiempo o la fecha de la acción.)

They arrived yesterday.

We bought this car five years ago.

I sold my car two years ago.

2. Describir eventos del pasado:

They met in San Francisco.

The plane was two hours late.

Why did you leave so early?

3. Describir eventos que se han repetido en el pasado:

They went to the mountains every winter.

We played chess every monday.

We changed flats very often.

Formar oraciones en el Simple Past tense


Oraciones positivas (afirmativas)
PERSONA + II FORMA DEL VERBO + OBJETO
I arrived yesterday.
You arrived yesterday.
He / she / it arrived yesterday.
We / you / they arrived yesterday.
Formación de preguntas
"Did" + PERSONA + VERBO (infinitivo) + OBJETO
Did I arrive yesterday?
Did you arrive yesterday?
"Did" + PERSONA + VERBO (infinitivo) + OBJETO
Did he/she/it arrive yesterday?
Did we/you/they arrive yesterday?
Formación de la negación
PERSONA + "did" + "not" + VERBO (infinitivo) + OBJETO
I did not go to the cinema.
You did not go to the cinema.
He / she / it did not go to the cinema.
We / you / they did not go to the cinema.
La segunda forma del verbo
1. Cuando usamos verbos regulares, formamos el Pasado Simple agregando "ed / d" al final.

arrive - arrived
work - worked
2. Hay verbos que cambian de forma irregular. También necesitas recordar sus segundas formas.

Time expressions
last night / week / month / year - Anoche/ semana / mes/ año
a few hours / minutes / days / - unas pocas horas / minutos/días/semanas
weeks ago atrás
many hours / minutes / days / - muchas horas / minutos / días / semanas
weeks ago atrás
a long time ago - hace mucho tiempo
during the war - durante la guerra
once - una vez

The Past Continuous Tense


Usos
1. Se usa el Past Continuous tense para decir que algo pasó en un tiempo específico del pasado:

Yesterday at 5 I was - Ayer a las 5 estaba nadando.


swimming.
Last summer we were living - El verano pasado estábamos viviendo
in London. en Londres.
Last weekend we were trying - El fin de semana pasada estábamos
to get to Brussels. intentando ir a Bruselas.
I was studying for my maths - Ayer a las 10:30 estaba estudiando
exam yesterday at 10.30. para my examen de matemáticas.
2. También se usa el Past Continuous cuando queremos decir que una acción fue interrumpida por
otra:

While she was sleeping the - Mientras dormía el teléfono sonó.


telephone rang.
During the lesson somebody - Durante la lección alguien golpeó
knocked at the door. a la puerta.
We were having a great time - Lo estábamos pasando genial
when my parents returned. cuando mis padres volvieron.
She was reading when it started - Ella estaba leyendo cuando
to rain. comenzó a llover.
El tiempo Pasado Continuo es la versión pasada del Presente Continuo.

I am going. - I was going.


(Estoy yendo.) (Estaba yendo.)
I am learning. - I was learning.
(Estoy aprendiendo.) (Estaba aprendiendo.)
I am sleeping. - I was sleeping.
(Estoy durmiendo.) (Estaba durmiendo.)
Recuerda: los tiempos verbales pasados en inglés no necesariamente son los
mismos tiempos pasados que en tu lengua. Piensa en cómo dirías esto en tu
lengua:

I was going. - Iba a (hacer algo que ya se dijo).


I was studying. - Estaba estudiando.
I was sleeping. - Estaba durmiendo.

Jack: Then for  it. I need the data now!

George: Fine. Let me check my files. Yes, I've got it. Shall I copy the file for
you or do you want me to print it again?

Jack: Just a copy, thanks. Now go back to your work, George.
