STARTING − DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General
A. The starting system supplies the mechanical power to turn the engine. The air pressure
to drive the turbine can be supplied by the auxiliary power unit (APU) or by the crossfeed
from an operating engine. An external ground air source can also be used.
B. Engines can also be started while airborne with the engine in the windmilling condition.
Airborne starts are made with or without the air turbine starter (ATS) as follows:
± Minimum 10% N2 (Altitude below 10,000 ft.)
± Minimum 13% N2 (Altitude above 10,000 ft.)
C. The electrical power to control the starting system is supplied by a 28 volts−dc battery
bus.
D. The starting system also has monitors, indications, and warnings. These are displayed
on the primary and secondary engine indication and crew alerting system (EICAS)
displays and the start/ignition control panel.

STARTING − MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

1. General
A. This gives the procedure to start the engine of one aircraft from a second aircraft with a
portable air hose assembly, connected between the two aircraft. The air hose assembly
uses engine bleed air from one aircraft (donor) to start the engine on a second aircraft
(recipient). Use this procedure when the APU cannot start the engine and a ground
air−start cart is not available.
B. The air hose assembly is made of a hose, 3.5 inch (88.9 mm) in diameter and 90 feet
(27.4 m) long with a quick−disconnect coupling assembly at each end. A ring handle on
each coupling lets you push and lock the coupling onto the nipple of the ground
air−supply connection. To disconnect the coupling from the ground air−supply
connection, the ring handle is pulled. One coupling has a swivel probe that opens the
check valve in the ground air−supply connection. The hose assembly weighs
approximately 72 lbs (32.7 kg).
C. Use of the air hose assembly is not recommended to start the engine of a second aircraft
with the APU of a donor aircraft. The electronic control unit (ECU) of the donor aircraft
APU, will not get a start signal and a compressor surge or damage to the APU can
occur.

2. Job Set−Up
Subtask 80−00−00−587−001
Refer to Figure 201 and Figure 202.

WARNING: USE EXTREME CAUTION IF THERE IS SNOW OR ICE ON THE GROUND.

MAKE SURE THAT THE TWO AIRCRAFT ARE FAR ENOUGH APART SO THAT
THE TWO AIRCRAFT CANNOT TOUCH EACH OTHER. THE DONOR
AIRCRAFT CAN MOVE AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE RECIPIENT AIRCRAFT
AND INJURIES TO PERSONS. THE DONOR AIRCRAFT USES A HIGH ENGINE
THRUST SETTING DURING THE ENGINE START.
A. Set the two aircraft side−by−side. The two aircraft can point in the same or in opposite
directions.
B. Make sure that the exhaust from the APU and the engines of one aircraft cannot flow
against the other aircraft, ground equipment, or persons
(Ref. TASK 71−00−00−868−801).
C. Make sure that the wheel chocks are installed and the two aircraft cannot move
(Ref. TASK 71−00−00−868−801).

3. Procedure
Subtask 80−00−00−868−001

(c) Push the coupling on the nipple and release the ring handle.
(d) Make sure that the coupling is correctly installed and locked on the nipple.
(e) Make sure that the hose has no loops or kinks and is not pulled tight.
NOTE: With all of the 10th stage bleed−air valves closed, it is usual for the
hose to pressurize by a small quantity because of valve leakage.
WARNING: DO NOT LET PERSONS STAND NEAR THE HOSE ASSEMBLY WHEN IT
PRESSURIZES. IF THE HOSE BREAKS FROM TOO MUCH PRESSURE, IT
CAN CAUSE INJURIES TO PERSONNEL.
D. In the donor aircraft:
(1) Push in the L 10TH STAGE or R 10TH STAGE switch/light on the BLEED AIR
panel. Make sure that the CLOSED legend goes off.
(2) If you use the right engine, push in the ISOL switch/light on the BLEED AIR panel.
Make sure that the OPEN legend comes on.
(3) Move the throttle lever to get a minimum 10th stage bleed−air pressure of 60 psi
(approximately 80% N2).
E. In the recipient aircraft:
(1) Do the start procedure for the left engine (Ref. TASK 71−00−00−868−806).
(2) In the recipient aircraft, tell the persons in the donor aircraft when the engine speed
gets to 55% (starter disengages).
F. In the donor aircraft, when you hear that the engine speed of the recipient aircraft
increased to 55%, set the throttle lever to the IDLE position.
CAUTION: DO NOT KEEP THE AIR HOSE PRESSURIZED TOO LONG. DAMAGE CAN
OCCUR TO THE HOSE FROM TOO MUCH HEAT. IF THE AMBIENT
TEMPERATURE IS MORE THAN 22°C (72° F) DO NOT LET THE HOSE
STAY PRESSURIZED FOR MORE THAN TWO MINUTES.
G. Remove the pressure from the 10th stage bleed−air ducts and the hose assembly as
follows:
(1) In the donor aircraft:
(a) Push out the L 10TH STAGE and R10TH STAGE switch/lights on the BLEED
AIR panel. Make sure that the CLOSED legends come on.
(b) Push out the ISOL switch/light on the BLEED AIR panel (if opened). Make sure
the OPEN legend goes off.
(2) In the recipient aircraft, make sure that the CLOSED legend of the L 10TH STAGE
switch/light on the BLEED AIR panel is on.
(3) In each aircraft, push in the L PACK and R PACK switch/lights on the
AIR−CONDITIONING panel. Make sure that the OFF legends go off.
H. Disconnect the air hose assembly, first from the donor aircraft, then from the recipient
aircraft, as follows:
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DISCONNECT THE AIR HOSE COUPLING
FROM THE GROUND AIR−SUPPLY CONNECTION. THE COUPLING
WILL GET VERY HOT AND CAN CAUSE BURNS. IF NECESSARY,
WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES TO HOLD THE COUPLING HANDLE.
(1) In each aircraft, monitor the EICAS ECS synoptic page. When the pressure in the
left 10th stage−bleed air duct is less than 6−7 psi, disconnect the hose assembly

CRANKING − DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General
A. The engine is started by the air turbine starter (ATS). The air pressure supply to the ATS
is controlled by the air starter valve, which is pneumatically operated and electrically
controlled.
B. Airborne starts in windmilling condition can be done at:
Minimum 10% N2 (Altitude below 10,000 ft)
Minimum 13% N2 (Altitude above 10,000 ft).
C. The starter changes the compressed air pressure into rotational mechanical energy
necessary to increase the speed of the engine to a combustion speed of 55 percent N2
rpm.
D. The starting system has the components that follow:
± Air turbine starter (ATS) (80−11−01)
± Air starter valve (80−11−03)
± Start/ignition control panel (74−30−00)
± Speed cutout switch (80−10−05)
± Pneumatic ducting (36−11−00).
2. Component Details
Refer to Figure 1.
A. Air Turbine Starter (ATS)
(1) The ATS is installed on the rear face of the accessory gearbox at the four o’clock
position.
(2) The ATS is a lightweight, single−stage, axial−flow turbine motor. The ATS has the
components that follow:
± Inlet assembly
± Reduction gear assembly
± Engagement mechanism
± Lubrication system
± Splined output−shaft assembly
± Monopole speed sensor.
Refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3.
(3) The inlet assembly is made of a single−stage stator, an axial−flow turbine wheel,
and a containment shield which keeps the turbine wheel if a failure occurs.
(4) The reduction gear assembly is made of a carrier assembly, planetary gears, a gear
shaft and related parts.
(5) The engagement mechanism has a clutch carrier, sprag clutch, and an oil pump.
(6) The ATS has a splash−type, self−lubrication system. A gerotor−type pump supplies
continuous clutch lubrication during ATS operation. The ATS has an oil fill plug and
a magnetic oil drain−plug. It is not necessary to drain the oil to examine the drain

plug for magnetic metal wear of the ATS.
(7) The splined output−shaft assembly has an emergency decoupler that disengages
the starter components from the engine if a malfunction of the sprag clutch occurs.
The output shaft also has a shear section which breaks if an overtorque condition
occurs. This prevents damage to the engine.
(8) An integral monopole speed sensor measures the speed of the gear teeth as they
turn. The monopole sensor sends a signal to the speed cutoff switch, which is
installed in the aft equipment compartment of the aircraft.
B. Air Starter Valve
Refer to Figure 1 and Figure 4.
(1) The air starter valve is installed on the engine between the pneumatic ducts and the
ATS at the four o’clock position.
(2) The air starter valve is a pneumatically−operated, solenoid−controlled regulating
and shutoff valve. It has a butterfly−type plate to control the air pressure supply to
the ATS.
(3) The air starter valve has an actuator section, a servo section, and a valve body
section:
± The actuator section, which has a diaphragm assembly, a relief valve assembly,
a position indicating−switch assembly, and an actuator housing assembly
± The servo section, which has two relief valve assemblies, a transfer plate, a
check valve, a solenoid valve assembly and a servo housing assembly
± The valve body section, which has the valve body, a butterfly shaft, an air filter,
and a butterfly plate.
C. Start/Ignition Control Panel
Refer to Figure 5.
(1) The start/ignition control panel is installed on the overhead panel in the flight
compartment. The start/ignition control panel has switch/lights for the left and right
engine start systems and for the A and B, and continuous ignition systems. The
switch/lights for the start system are of the momentary contact push−type, identified
as START and STOP.
D. Speed Cutout Switch
Refer to Figure 1.
(1) The speed cutoff switch is installed in the aft equipment compartment, attached to
the mounting bracket of the engine control amplifier. The switch monitors the signal
from the monopole speed sensor in the ATS. The switch contacts control the
operation of the start relay. When the switch is closed, it gives 28 volts−dc to the
start relay. When the engine N2 speed increases to 54−57% or 3800 to 4000 rpm of
the ATS output shaft speed, the switch contacts open and remove power from the
start relay to close the air starter valve.
3. Operation
Refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3.

C
AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
A. Air Turbine Starter (ATS)
(1) Air goes through the vanes of the turbine inlet stator and is turned axially across the
blades of the turbine wheel and causes the turbine wheel to turn at a high speed.
Used air is let out of the ATS through the exhaust housing at approximately
atmospheric pressure.
(2) The reduction gear set decreases the high speed, low torque of the turbine wheel to
a lower speed and higher torque. The three gear shafts turn the internal spur gear
and decrease the speed more. The operation of the internal spur gear turns the hub
assembly which then moves the sprag clutch and gives a signal to the monopole
speed sensor. The sprag clutch turns the clutch shaft which turns the oil pump and
output shaft assembly. When the output shaft assembly, turned by the engine, gets
to a specified speed, the sprag clutch is over−run and lets the output shaft
assembly turn the clutch shaft. This lets the reduction gear section stop after a start
cycle is completed.
(3) The oil pump, turned by the output shaft assembly, makes sure that the clutch shaft
bearings are lubricated during engine operation.
B. Air Starter Valve
Refer to Figure 4.
(1) When inlet air pressure is applied with the solenoid valve assembly de−energized,
inlet air pressure flows through the air filter and inlet orifice, where a pressure
decrease occurs, and into the closing chamber. The pressure decrease across the
inlet orifice causes closing chamber pressure to equal the adjustment of the relief
valve assembly (C). Because the pressure in the closing chamber, helped by spring
force, is more than the ambient air pressure in the intermediate and opening
chambers, the butterfly plate is kept in the full closed position. Inlet air pressure is
also supplied to the relief valve assembly (A) and the solenoid valve assembly.
(2) If the inlet air pressure is more than the pressure value at which relief valve
assembly (A) is set, the ball valve will move from its seat and release the pressure
to ambient. This prevents too much pressure in the actuator housing assembly and
damage to the diaphragm assembly.
(3) When the solenoid valve assembly is energized, inlet air pressure is sent through
the solenoid valve assembly to relief valve assembly (C) and the opening chamber
orifices. As inlet air pressure increases to a pressure value above which relief valve
assembly (C) is set, the poppet valve will move from its seat. This releases the
unwanted pressure downstream of the valve. Thus, relief valve assembly (C) keeps
a controlled inlet air pressure (opening pressure) to the opening chamber, through
the opening chamber orifice.
(4) As the inlet air pressure flows through the opening chamber orifice, a pressure
decrease occurs. This lets the pressure in the opening chamber slowly increase.
This low increase in pressure will overcome the intermediate chamber pressure, the
closing chamber pressure and the spring force, to slowly move the butterfly plate in
the direction of the fully open position. When the butterfly plate is fully open, the
contacts of the position indicating switch will close to give a start signal to the
EICAS system.
(5) As the butterfly plate moves to the open position, pressure downstream of the valve
increases to a predetermined controlled value. Downstream pressure on the poppet
valve of the relief valve assembly (C), sets the pressure level at which the relief
valve assembly opens. This causes the closing and opening chamber pressures to

EFFECTIVITY: See Pageblock 80−10−00 page 1

C
AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
increase at the same rate as the downstream pressure. As the opening chamber
pressure gets to or becomes more than the relief valve assembly (B) pressure, the
relief valve assembly opens, and releases the opening chamber pressure to
ambient. This stops the increase in the opening chamber pressure.
(6) Downstream pressure is also sent to the trim piston and through the proportional
orifices into the intermediate chamber. The proportional orifices keep intermediate
chamber pressure at a level less than the downstream pressure. As downstream
pressure increases, intermediate chamber pressure increases. This pressure
increase plus an increase in closing chamber pressure, operates with spring force
to overcome the opening chamber pressure. This causes the butterfly plate to move
in the direction of the closed position and cause the downstream pressure to
decrease to the predetermined value.
(7) As the downstream pressure decreases below a predetermined value, the
intermediate chamber pressure decreases. This pressure decrease, and the
opening chamber pressure, are more than the closing chamber pressure and spring
force. This causes the butterfly plate to move in the direction of the open position.
This lets the valve keep a controlled downstream pressure independent of the inlet
air pressure.
(8) If the downstream pressure increases, the trim piston senses the increase and
opens the relief valve assembly (B). This releases the opening chamber pressure to
ambient. The opening chamber pressure decreases in proportion to the
overpressure. This causes the butterfly plate to move in the direction of the closed
position, thus the downstream pressure decreases to the predetermined value, the
trim piston senses this and lets the relief valve assembly (B) close. The opening
chamber pressure increases, which moves the butterfly plate to the modulated
position before the overpressure.
(9) When power is removed from the solenoid valve assembly, the valve assembly
moves to close off the inlet air pressure and release the opening chamber pressure
to ambient. Opening chamber pressure opens the check valve which removes the
air pressure quickly from the chamber. At the same time, intermediate chamber
pressure bleeds through the proportioning orifices to ambient and the closing
chamber pressure increases to inlet pressure. The decrease in opening and
intermediate chamber pressures and the increase in closing chamber pressure, and
with the spring force, moves the butterfly plate fully closed. When the plate is fully
closed, contacts in the position indicating switch open to remove the signal to the
EICAS system.
C. Normal Start
Refer to Figure 5 and Figure 6.
(1) The ATS duty cycles are given in the engine operating procedures.
(2) Engine start is controlled at the start/ignition panel on the pilot’s overhead panel.
The two engine−starting electrical systems are the same and independent of each
other.
(3) To start the engine, the applicable engine START switch/light is pushed and held
for two seconds. The START switch contacts gives 28 volts dc through the usually
closed contacts of the STOP switch and the speed switch to the start relay. The
second of the START switch contacts gives a ground to give the conditions that
follow:
± Energize the start relay

± The START legend comes on
± The related ENGINE START white status message is shown on the engine
indication and crew alerting system (EICAS) status page
± Gives a signal to the auxiliary power unit (APU) electronic control unit (ECU) to
open the variable geometry diffuser (VGD).
(4) The closed contacts of the start relay will give the functions that follow:
± Open the 10th stage bleed−air shutoff and isolation valves (The white 10TH
ISOL OPEN message is shown on the EICAS status page)
± Close the valves for the left and right air conditioning packs
± Energize the armed A or B ignition relay, which energizes the related igniter and
gives the applicable amber IGNITION message on the EICAS status page
± Energize the solenoid in the starter valve to open it
± Give a hold circuit through the speed cutout switch to keep the start relay
energized until N2 speed is 54−57 %.
(5) While the air starter valve is open during the engine start, the starter valve
position−indicating switch gives a ground for:
± The start relay
± The related ENGINE START white status message on the EICAS status page.
(6) When N2 rpm gets to 54 to 57 percent, a signal from the ATS monopole will cause
the speed cutout switch contacts to open. This removes power from the start relay
which will cause the conditions that follow:
± Remove power from the air starter valve to cause it to close
± The related ENGINE START white status message on the EICAS status page
will go off
± The START legend on the START switch/light will go off
± Give a signal to the APU ECU to close the VGD.
D. Emergency Stop
(1) When the STOP switch is pushed momentarily during the start cycle, power is
removed from the speed cutout switch which causes the starter valve to close.

(1) Torque the nut on the V−band coupling (8) to 50 pound−inches (5.7 N·m).
(2) Tap around the outer edges of the V−band coupling (8) with a plastic or rawhide
mallet.
NOTE: This will correctly engage the V−band coupling (8) with the flanges.
(3) Torque the nut on the V−band coupling (8) again to 50 pound−inches (5.7 N·m).
(4) Do steps D. (2) and (3) again until the torque value is stable at 50 pound−inches
(5.7 N·m).
E. Tighten the aft V−clamp coupling (7) as follows:
(1) Torque the nut on the V−band coupling (7) to 30 pound−inches (3.4 N·m).
(2) Tap around the outer edges of the V−band couplings (7) with a plastic or rawhide
