As a result, the vote could be seen as "a referendum" on incumbent leader Manasseh Sogavare's embrace of China, says researcher Edward Cavanough, who travelled across the country for his book 'Divided Isles' documenting the nation's turn to Beijing."The PM has been very adept at leaning into the and playing each of these major and regional powers off each other to gain incredible concessions," he says.Located about 1,600km (900 miles) north of Australia, the Solomon Islands is one of the poorest countries in the region due to decades of tribal conflict.Up until 2017, Australia led a peacekeeping mission here.Then two years after the mission withdrew, Prime Minister Sogavare chose to drop his country's decades-long diplomatic relationship with Taiwan in favour of Beijing. Then, in 2022, he signed a security pact with China - the details of which are still not publicly known.That set off major alarm bells for Australia and other Pacific neighbours. At one point, there was talk the treaty could allow a Chinese naval base to be established in the US-dominated Pacific region - rumours dismissed by Mr Sogavare. The Nazul Land Bill has sparked political controversy in Uttar Pradesh, involving both the ruling BJP and its NDA allies, as well as opposition parties. The bill, which prohibits the conversion of Nazul land into freehold for private individuals, aims to reclaim land from the land mafia and lease violators. It has faced strong opposition from various political figures, including leaders from the INDIA bloc and some BJP legislators. The legislation requires Nazul land leaseholders to report their land use details within three months, with potential adverse consequences for non-compliance. Notable objections have come from opposition parties such as the Samajwadi Party and Congress, along with voices from within the BJP, including Union Minister Anupriya Patel. India and China have withdrawn troops from contentious areas in Demchok and Depsang, following an agreement to ease tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Both countries have returned to troop positions from before April 2020, dismantling previous temporary structures. Verification of this withdrawal is set to occur in the coming days, allowing for the resumption of coordinated patrolling. Both armies will maintain dialogue, with a traditional sweets exchange expected during Diwali. The Indian Army plans to resume patrols in Demchok and Depsang by month-end, giving advance notice to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to prevent conflicts. The agreement also requires the PLA to inform India of their patrols ahead of time. The disengagement process began around October 24, with both sides withdrawing from key friction points and disassembling temporary installations. The Indian Army is repositioning westward, while Chinese forces move east. A devastating roadside bomb attack struck a convoy of foreign diplomats in Pakistan's Swat Valley on Sunday, killing a police officer and injuring four others. The diplomats, nearly a dozen in number, were visiting the area at the invitation of the local chamber of commerce, and thankfully, all the ambassadors remained safe and were swiftly relocated to a secure location before departing for Islamabad. The attack highlights the ongoing security concerns in the Swat Valley, which has long been plagued by Islamist militant insurgency. Pakistani counter-terrorist forces maintain a strong presence in the region, but militants have escalated their attacks since breaking a ceasefire with the government in late 2022. The valley has witnessed several high-profile attacks, including the 2012 shooting of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but authorities suspect the involvement of militant organizations, particularly Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
