Live news from Day 2 at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo in Amsterdam, Netherlands: ABB's compact liquid-cooled drives and drive modules ABB (Booth 9020) is displaying its ACS880LC series of liquid-cooled (LC) drives and drive modules with direct liquid cooling at this year’s show in Amsterdam. Their compact yet robust design provides an ideal solution for various applications where space savings, silent operation or durability in harsh environments are a must. Since the liquid cooling takes care of 98% of the heat losses, no additional filtered air cooling is needed, and the modules can be mounted into totally enclosed cabinets or enclosures with high protection class. “At this year’s show, we’re focusing on the lower power modules that we launched a couple of years ago, particularly for smaller vessels,” explained Daniel Olsson, global sales, marine industry, system drives, ABB. “We’ve put them in a custom enclosure, to show some different ways of integrating them into vessels with very confined space, to spark some discussion on how you can do concentrated or distributed common DC systems in these vessels.” It's not too late to attend the show! ** INDUSTRY SAFETY ALERT ** Summary: While rolling out air and water hoses across an AFC installation, a fitter was asked to connect a 50 mm air hose to a manifold before the hose was rolled out. The fitter removed a retaining staple to connect into a 50 mm airline supply. The end cap ejected, hitting the fitter in the leg just below the kneecap. The fitter was unaware that the line was pressurised. Recommendations to industry: Mine operators should have procedures in place to prevent exposing workers to the hazards of stored energy. Mine operators should ensure workers are trained on these procedures, and that all workers are aware of the status of stored energy sources. Join Authors Axel Rauber (ABB Switzerland Ltd.), Shane Harvey (Elliott Group, Ebara Corp), and Federico Bertoldi (ABB Switzerland Ltd.) when they present a case study illuminating "Redundant VSD Systems for Critical Compressors - Implementation." Traditional high-power compressor applications have relied on steam or gas turbines as primary drivers. In response to the growing emphasis on clean energy initiatives, the industry is shifting towards electric motors as an alternative to turbine drivers. When speed control and therefore variable speed drives (VSD) are required, their reliability becomes a concern. As the risk of unplanned process interruptions is to be mitigated, hot redundancy concepts were developed. This case study focuses on the application of such a VSD redundancy concept for the High Pressure and Refrigeration Compressor services within the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) process. The selection of VSD technology was driven by specific process requirements, including the need for minimal switch-over time. Further, this presentation details the journey towards a successful handover to production, highlighting the considerations, challenges, and outcomes of implementing redundant VSD systems in lieu of mechanical drivers for large critical compressor applications.
