Yesterday I was at alda* - European Association for Local Democracy event, talking about Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) digitalization. It is clear we are entering a new era of our history: the era of #cities and #digitalization. These two major transformations, the urbanization and the digitalization, are changing our world and they are blurring old boundaries. The AMB has been implementing technological solutions that make us go forward while remembering for whom we govern: 36 municipalities! We have three world renowned practices I talked about yesterday: - #SmartAMB, which allows coordinated management of the supra-municipal services of the AMB. The tool manages more than 5,000 bus stops, 12 waste plants, 41 beaches, 53 parks and 14 sections of the Llobregat River. - #IDEAMB platform, which brings together georeferenced open data, allowing citizens to download all the cartographic information regarding our metropolitan territory. This has helped to foster research on key matters for the metropolitan government. - #MobileMapping. This survey allows us to document all the elements in our main highways in 3D. Thanks to it, now it is possible to manage and maintain them remotely and efficiently. Rather than considering #technology as a drug we take to make us work, we could consider it as an opportunity to foster more democratic institutions. Rather than a way to reach one solution, it should be the path to diversity of opinions and alternatives. Our endeavor should not be just answering preconceived questions, but developing tools, so citizens can ask new ones and engage with us in finding new policies. #localdemocracy #tech #cities #metropolis

🗞 Three #MissionCities were named as the selected projects in the Sustainable Cities Mobility Challenge! Local projects in two districts from Barcelona City Council (Cornellà de Llobregat and Santa Coloma de Gramenet), Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, and Gemeente Utrecht are the Mission Cities alongside the city of #Liverpool who were chosen to receive funding that support the transition towards more sustainable, greener, and more citizen-focused transport 🏙 The Sustainable Cities Mobility Challenge, coordinated by Climate-KIC and FedEx Express Europe, raises the opportunities for cities, municipalities, and local authorities to decarbonise transport and build more climate-resilient communities. The initiative supports cities to make their sustainable mobility ambitions a reality as they strive towards climate neutrality. 📢 The #ScalableCities 🏙 community is eager to announce its participation at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 taking place in Barcelona, Spain between November 5th - 7th. Scalable Cities will be joining other European projects and initiatives under the joint European Commission-led representation featuring a diverse group of partners, initiatives, and projects bringing a wealth of experience, knowledge, best practices and sustainable solutions to European cities enabling them to achieve their climate neutrality goals. All partners and projects under the joint representation are taking part in the promotion, implementation, replication, and scale up of the #EuropeanGreenDeal and #REPowerEU policies spearheaded by the European Commission to ensure affordable, secure and sustainable energy for climate neutral Europe. 🌞 Understanding Albedo and Its Impact on Urban Environments 🌆 In our quest to develop more sustainable and livable cities, understanding and managing urban #albedo plays a crucial role. Albedo, the measure of a surface's ability to reflect sunlight, significantly influences urban microclimates, energy consumption, and overall environmental impact. At Latitudo 40 we accurately calculate the albedo of cities, providing essential data for urban planners, architects and policy-makers. The city of #Toulon, France 🇫🇷 , serves as a great example of an applied albedo layer in an urban area. What are the practical use cases for the albedo layer? 🏠 Cool Roof Initiatives: Our technology helps identify buildings with low albedo roofs, paving the way for targeted interventions like installing cool roofs. 🌱 Urban Greening: Albedo data is also crucial in guiding the strategic placement of vegetation and green spaces. Plants generally have a higher albedo compared to typical urban materials like asphalt and concrete. Setting up consistent policy evaluation systems is still a challenge for many European cities. Urban digital twins offer a chance to address this. Barcelona, in partnership with Barcelona Supercomputing Center, is now using digital twin methodologies to evaluate the social coverage of its climate shelter network - that is, whether population groups most vulnerable to climate change (children and seniors) have quick access to a climate shelter (less than 10 min walking from their homes). Results show that over 90% of vulnerable residents have a climate shelter within 10-ming walking distance. However, in August -when climate shelters are most needed- coverage drops to 75%, as some of the shelters (which are public facilities) close during summer holidays season. The digital twin also allows for a precise visualisation of the geographical distribution of the shelters network's coverage. The EN-UAC (ERA-NET Cofund Urban Accessibility and Connectivity) project "Triple Access Planning for Uncertain Futures" aims to advance guidance to improve the resilience and adaptability of sustainable urban mobility plans (SUMPs) in the face of uncertainty. Recently the project launched a handbook for practioners', which is available and free to download! The handbook supports a way of thinking and acting that is intended to mark a change from ”traditional” transport planning to a planning that is more vision-led (‘decide’) instead of forecast-led (‘predict’). It includes digital accessibility alongside spatial proximity and mobility (together making ‘triple access’). It also includes addressing uncertainty about the future. Today, I had the pleasure of accompanying Mikel Landabaso in the SEDEC Committee of the Comité Europeo de las Regiones , chaired by Major of #Gabrovo, Ms. Tanja Hristova. We presented the work of the Joint Research Centre on place-based innovation including: 1️⃣ the fact that innovation is the key enabler for Europe’s competitiveness in the frame of industrial transitions towards sustainability 2️⃣ the necessity of considering the place-specific dimensions when designing innovative policies, as each territory has its own specificity (geography, human capital, climate…) 3️⃣ the need of involving practitioners in a cocreation process in order to implement such policies and extract lessons from the results We explained that our recently published #ACTIONBook can be instrumental to help territories in the design of innovation policies for place-based transformation and provided to the representatives of the European regions with a roadmap on how they can engage in this learning process. 📝 UIC Barcelona School of Architecture and House Habitat have signed a collaboration agreement aimed at promoting research in the development of sustainable, efficient and healthy housing. The agreement sets out the cooperation of both entities in the development and implementation of scientific research programmes and projects in bioclimatic architecture. “This agreement reinforces our commitment to research in sustainable architecture. In Adrià's own words: "We've been engaging as a design collective in several fronts with the non-speculative community-led cooperative housing movement in Catalonia, designing services, learning platforms, facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration and so on.
