  • Traffic Management 2.0 – Learning the Win-Win from Four Different Case Studies

11th ITS European Congress Glasgow 2016 - Conference proceedings

The TM 2.0 ERTICO Innovation Platform members are cooperating under the common belief that interactive traffic management and the alignment of the individual driver’s objectives to those that the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) should adhere to is both feasible and advantageous to all stakeholders involved. As traffic operators, acting usually on behalf of the public authorities are challenged to keep the traffic flowing, reduce environmental and noise pollution and keep up with new mobility…

The TM 2.0 ERTICO Innovation Platform members are cooperating under the common belief that interactive traffic management and the alignment of the individual driver’s objectives to those that the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) should adhere to is both feasible and advantageous to all stakeholders involved. As traffic operators, acting usually on behalf of the public authorities are challenged to keep the traffic flowing, reduce environmental and noise pollution and keep up with new mobility demands on the existing transport infrastructure, the users (drivers and passengers alike) are seeking more and more information that is tailor-made and relevant to them and their mobility requirements. The era of TM 2.0 enables vehicles to interact and exchange information with the TMCs. The paper discusses the value proposition of the TM 2.0 concept using four urban regions as case studies. Although every region has unique needs and characteristics, there is still a set of basic principles that need to be covered when it comes to ensuring a good business case. It’s all about the Win-Win.

Automation along the whole chain of road transportation and services will play a key role in future transport systems. Traffic Management should be prepared to accommodate the circulation of automated vehicles. A survey conducted among the members of the TM2.0 ERTICO Platform, including consultation by external stakeholders, reveals that road automation is expected to enable the provision of more reliable, effective and efficient Traffic Management services, which will increase road safety and efficiency and enhance environmental protection. High quality, detailed data of the current status of the road network and of the whole transport system should be always available, covering the whole road network. The traffic environment should be harmonised, while data privacy and security should be also safeguarded. New communication means with the automated vehicles should be conceptualised and designed, replacing the traditional communication means with human drivers, and this may require changes in the physical infrastructure.

  • Infotransit

    - actualidad

    -

Four European cities/regions (Barcelona, Gipuzkoa-San Sebastian, Newcastle and Reggio Emilia) have come together under the project smartCEM (Smart Connected Electro Mobility) to demonstrate the role of ICT solutions to overcome the limitations of electro mobility for cities and citizens.

I have been the leader of the Barcelona pilot in smartCEM piloting an innovative one-way sharing scheme with electric scooters.
