He wrote many musical plays for the London theatre, the most popular of which was the stage version of 1066 and All That, and collaborated with such well-known figures as A. P. Herbert and others. He founded half-a-dozen magazines and edited many books of light verse. He was a pioneer of television in its early days in England, and wrote and produced his own programs since 1938. He was a countryman, first and last; and in Great Britain he is best known for his delight in country matters, as expressed in his biography of Richard Jefferies, his four books of garden verse—the Green Fingers series—and in A Cottage in the Country.ver menos
