Stewart
an island in the Pacific Ocean, south of New Zealand. Part of New Zealand. Separated from South Island by the Foveaux Strait. Area, 1,742 sq km. Population, 414 (1971). Stewart Island is composed of metamorphic rocks and of granites. It rises to a maximum elevation of 978 m. The island has a temperate maritime climate and is covered with deciduous and coniferous forests and marshes. The population engages in fishing. The largest populated locality is Oban. The island is a popular summer resort.
