Stebnitskii, Ieronim Ivanovich
Born Sept. 30 (Oct. 12), 1832, in Volyn’ Province; died Jan. 29 (Feb. 10), 1897, in St. Petersburg. Russian geodesist. Corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1878). Infantry general.
Stebnitskii graduated from the Institute of Railroad Engineers in 1852. He became head of the Caucasus Military Topographical Division in 1867 and of the Military Topographical Division at Main Headquarters in 1886. In 1860 he began work on the triangularon and mapping of the Caucasus, Transcaspian region, and Asia Minor, and he supervised the analysis of the triangulation and leveling.
