a state of W Mexico, on the Pacific: includes the offshore Tres Mar?as Islands. Capital: Tepic. Pop.: 919 739 (2000). Area: 27 621 sq. km (10 772 sq. miles)

Nayarit

 

a state in western Mexico. Area, 27,600 sq km; population, 544,000 (1970). Its capital is Tepic. The economy is primarily agricultural. Along the coast and on mountain slopes up to an elevation of 1,000 m, sugarcane, bananas, peanuts, and tobacco are cultivated; at higher elevations, maize and beans are grown. Industries include food processing (primarily sugar), textiles, and leather footwear.
