From Late Latin superlātīvus (superlative), from Latin superlātus (extravagant, of hyperbole), past participle of superfero (carry over), from both super (above, on top of, upon), from *eks-uper, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eǵʰs (out of), and *uperi (above, over), from *upó (under, below), perhaps from *h₃ewp- + and from fero (I bear, carry), from Proto-Italic *ferō (carry, bear), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéreti (to be carrying), from *bʰer- (to bear, carry).
