silakka
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Originally meant "salted herring". Probably borrowed from Swedish sillake, from sill (“herring”) + lake (“brine”) (compare saltlake), referring to the brine herrings were salted with. The word may have influenced by salakka, another word for a fish, in both form and meaning.
