Etymology

[edit]

From Old English fyxe, from Proto-West Germanic *fuhsini, from Proto-Germanic *fuhsinī. The -en suffix suggests that the feminine suffix was later added, or that the word actually comes from Old English *fyxen (akin to German Füchsin). In either case, equivalent to fox +‎ -en (feminine suffix).
