[edit]From Middle English sengle, from Old French sengle, cengle (Modern French sangle), from Late Latin cingula, from Latin cingulum (“girdle”), from cingere (“to gird”). Doublet of cinch. Compare also Middle English kyngle, kyngll (“girdle, brooch”) from Old Norse kinga (“brooch”).
