[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *bītan, whence also Old English bītan and Old Norse bíta, Gothic 𐌱𐌴𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (beitan). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyd- (“to split”).
